Hi everyone Mr. Maloney here with the Cubmaster Minute, presented by Pack 457 in Zelienople Pennsylvania.

To start, I want to emphasize that our Leadership team always intends to lock in our Pack Schedule of events (including dates, times, and locations) by the beginning of each Pack year.  Unfortunately, the pandemic has made securing locations difficult and we have sometimes had to change our schedule with little advance notice.  So, THANK YOU to all of our families for your ongoing flexibility and understanding as we’ve navigated these challenges.

All that being said, I am happy to announce that we have confirmed the Pack event schedule through May 1, 2022 and I’d like to share that schedule with you now.

January 2022

Take Me Out to the Board Game: Friday, January 21

You should have already received the invitation for our first meeting of 2022: Take Me Out the Board Game.  This meeting will take place starting at 6PM on Friday, January 21 at Glade Run Lutheran Services.  Scouts should bring their favorite card or board game to the meeting (ideally one that can be played in 10 – 15 minutes).  During the meeting, our Scouts will break into small groups to play each other’s games.

February 2022

We have two exciting Pack events scheduled in February.

Scout Sunday: Sunday, February 6

We start on February 6 with Scout Sunday; the day we celebrate the founding of the Boy Scouts of America with our Charter Organization, The Zelienople English Lutheran Church (or ELC).  They first chartered our Troop and Pack in the 1940s and have supported us ever since.  To show our appreciation to the Church and its members, we will join with Troop 457 to participate in ELC’s 9:45 AM service with a pancake breakfast to follow.  Scouts who are participating in this event should arrive at ELC by 9:30AM.  Remember, Scout Sunday is not about your religious faith. You do not need to be Lutheran to attend this service. We encourage all Scouts and their families to attend.

Snow Tubing: Saturday, February 19

Our February Pack activities continue on Saturday, February 19 from 10 AM – 1 PM when we’ll head to AvalancheXpress to go snow tubing.  Like always, all of our Scouts and their family members are invited to participate in this event.  However, due to low fundraising sales this year, the Pack is only able to cover the cost of our Scouts’ passes for the activity.  Passes for other family members who would like to snow tube can be purchased at our discounted rate during the RSVP process.  (Family members who do NOT want to snow tube can attend for no additional charge.) Please follow the instructions in the meeting invitation to RSVP by “ordering” your Scout and your family’s passes on our Pack online store.  The invitation also includes a link to AvalancheXpress’ Waiver Form.  Please complete this form for everyone in your family who will be snow tubing.

All RSVPs must be received by Saturday, February 5th to receive the discounted rate.  If your plans change after February 5 (you can now attend or not attend), please contact myself or Mrs. Kovacic to discuss your options.  Please note that we cannot guarantee a refund after February 5.

March 2022

Pinewood Derby: Friday and Saturday, March 11 - 12

Our Pack fun rolls on in March as we hold our annual PINEWOOD DERBY!  This year’s race will be held at the Gym at Glade Run Lutheran Services on March 11th and 12th.  We’ll cover more on the Pinewood Derby in an upcoming Cubmaster Minute but you can get a head start by visiting derby.CubScoutPack457.org to access our Pinewood Derby Hub where you will find all the latest information on the race including: our official rules, a listing of awards, prior year race results, design and building resources and more.

  • Scouts should have received their Pinewood Derby car kits at our December meeting.  Contact your den leader if you did not receive your kit.
  • We’re also excited to announce the return of The Open Invitational!  This race allows our Scouts’ family and friends to design and build their own Pinewood Derby cars to race on Race Day.  You can register for the Open Invitational on the Pack Webstore for a $5 donation.
  • Registration night is on Friday, March 11.  All racers will be asked to sign up to checkin time slots during which their cars will be inspected, weighed, and impounded overnight.  (You cannot register on Race Day.
  • Race Day starts Saturday, March 12 at 10 AM and will include:
    • Den Races
    • Presentation of Advancement to our Scouts
    • Induction of our New Cubmaster, Mr. Burr
    • The Pack Finals
    • The Open Invitational

All our members and their families are invited to join us for the Derby and we plan to provide a livestream option again this year for those that cannot attend in person.

April 2022

April is another double Pack meeting month.

Arrow of Light & Crossover Ceremony: April 9

We kickoff the month at 1PM Saturday, April 9th with the Arrow of Light and Crossover Ceremonies at the Zelienople Community Park amphitheater.  During this meeting, we will present members of Den 3 with their Arrow of Light rank; the highest rank in Cub Scouting and the only Cub Scout rank that is worn on a Scouts BSA uniform.  We’ll also recognize these Scouts reaching the end of their adventures on the Cub Scout Trail and we will send them off to their next adventure in our Scouts BSA Troop.

While this meeting is very much focused on our oldest Scouts, we strongly encourage ALL of our members to join us for this event.  For many of the Scouts in Den 3, this is the culmination of 5 or 6 years of work and it shows our younger Scouts what they are working towards.

Pack Campout: April 29 - May 1

Finally , we’ll conclude our April events with a Pack Campout at Moraine State Park, April 29 through May 1.  All of our members, including those from Den 3, are encouraged to attend this campout even if you aren’t able to spend the night.  RSVPs for this event will be handled through an online form (linked to in the invite) so we can gather all of the information we need to plan food and activities for this weekend.  Please RSVP for the Pack campout no later than WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20.

All of these events are now available in the Pack Calendar on Scoutbook.  You will automatically receive 2 reminder emails for each event (typically 2 weeks before and 3 days before the event).  PLEASE be sure to RSVP so we can use the headcount to better plan for our activities.  You can find a link to a video explaining how to RSVP in Scoutbook in the reference information section below.

That’s all for this episode of The Cubmaster Minute.  I look forward to seeing all of you at these exciting events, but until then stay safe and stay Scouting.
