In this episode of the Cubmaster Minute, we cover our Pack Theme for November 2020.

Hi everyone!  Mr. Maloney here for the Cub Master Minute presented by Pack 457 in Zelienople, PA.

It’s a new month and time for us to talk about our new Pack Theme.  This year, we’re focusing on the SCOUT OATH and our theme for this month is DUTY TO COUNTRY.

Doing our DUTY TO COUNTRY is all about being a good citizen and obeying the law.  And November is a great month to talk about this because there are two days this month that remind us about the importance of doing our Duty to Country.

The first day is Election Day which occurs on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November.  This is the day that people who are old enough can cast their votes to choose who will represent them in our government.  It is a day that shows how our government is, as Abraham Lincoln described it, OF the people (we’re choosing our fellow country men and women for these positions), BY the people (our votes help to choose our government officials), and FOR the people (the candidate who wins is chosen by the majority of voters).   Voting is a DUTY that your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, any who old enough has to shape the future of our country.

The second important day is November 11, Veterans Day.  This is a day where we honor and celebrate those who have served in the US military.  (Technically, we honor our those currently in the military on Armed Forces Day which is the third Sunday in May but I like to honor anyone who has or is serving in the military.) These men and women did their DUTY and put their lives on the line to defend our country and protect our interests world wide.

I know what you’re thinking… “Mr. Maloney, I’m not old enough to vote or to join the military.  How can I do my duty to my county?”  Well, first and foremost, you can obey the rules and laws our communities have put into place to keep us safe and secure.  You can be a good citizen by doing good turns in our community like picking up trash in the park or helping someone in need.  And as you get older, learn all you can about how our country works and be a part of the process as a voter, maybe serving in the military or being an elected official in our government.

However you choose to show your DUTY TO COUNTRY, I know that you’ll do great at it.  Until next time, stay safe and stay Scouting.
