It’s October and time for our new Pack Theme!

Hi everyone!  Mr. Maloney here for the Cub Master Minute presented by Pack 457 in Zelienople, PA.  Our monthly journey through the Scout Oath continues here in October as we focus on our pledge to do our DUTY TO GOD.

As you know, part of being a Scout is having a belief in God. Every time you repeat the Scout Oath or Law, you reconfirm that you will do your duty to God, and that you are reverent.  Many of you are members of a large, organized religion.  You might be Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Jewish, or any one of a number of other faiths. You probably pray or attend and hopefully participate in religious services often.

But some members of your den and Pack might not belong to a regular church group. That doesn’t mean they don’t believe in a higher power.

Native Americans believe that the Great Spirit is the life force that flows through all living things and controls the wind, fire, and the Earth. You might think of the Great Spirit as Mother Nature. Nature has created a world for its creatures that allows them to live and prosper, from the lowest insects to the mighty eagle. To me, that sounds like a higher power at work.

It doesn’t matter to me how you believe in God— whether you attend church every week or simply respect the power of nature as the Native Americans do.  But I can’t imagine how this world could have come to exist without God, and I don’t want to think about where it will go if he isn’t there to guide us.

DUTY TO GOD is such an important part of being a Scout, the Boy Scouts of America has partnered with many faiths to develop a Religious Emblem program to encourage Scouts to grow stronger in their faith.

While these are recognized by the BSA, they are not specifically a Scouting Award.  The programs are run by each faith and the award is conferred on a Scout by his or her religious leader.  You can learn more about the Religious Emblem Program by clicking the links in the description, by emailing me at cubmaster@cubscoutpack457.org, or by checking with your religious leader.

I hope today that you learned more about the importance of doing your DUTY TO GOD.  Until next time, stay safe and stay Scouting.
